I Was Raped. Could I Be Pregnant? What You Need to Know

If you’ve just gone through a sexual assault, we’re so sorry.
We want you to hear this right away: It’s not your fault.
You did not deserve this. You didn’t cause it. And you’re not alone.

After something so painful, it’s normal to feel afraid, numb, confused, angry, or all of the above. You may feel like your whole world turned upside down. And on top of all that, you might be wondering if you could be pregnant.

This article is here to give you clear answers — and remind you that you matter. Right now, your well-being comes first.

Can I Get Pregnant After Being Raped?

Yes. Unfortunately, pregnancy after rape is medically possible.

Even though the act was violent and against your will, your body may still respond like it would in any other situation.

According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists:

  • About 5% of sexual assaults result in pregnancy for women between ages 12 and 45 who aren’t using contraception.
  • If the rape occurred close to ovulation, the chance of pregnancy can go up to 30%.
  • On average, if it happened during your fertile days, the chance is about 16%.

There’s a myth that stress from trauma can prevent pregnancy — but experts agree this is not true. While chronic stress can affect fertility over time, acute trauma (like rape) does not block pregnancy.

How Do I Know If I’m Pregnant?

You’ll need to wait until the time your period was supposed to come. If it doesn’t show up, that’s the right moment to take a pregnancy test.

This waiting period can feel very heavy — like holding your breath without knowing what will come next. If you’re anxious, know that you don’t have to go through this alone.

At Centro Tepeyac, we offer certified pregnancy tests and one-on-one conversations with caring client advocates. They’re trained to walk with you through this moment — always with respect, compassion, and zero judgment.

What Should I Do Now?

We know this is a lot. But you only need to take one step at a time. Here are some things you can do — only when and if you feel ready:

1. Find a Safe Place

The first thing is making sure you feel physically and emotionally safe. That might be with someone you trust, or it might mean contacting a local support organization.

2. Get Medical Attention

You don’t need to be visibly injured to see a doctor. A hospital or clinic can help you:

  • Take care of your body
  • Prevent infections
  • Document what happened, if you want to keep that option open

You can go to the ER even if you’re not ready to report to the police. The decision is yours.

3. Talk to Someone

The National Sexual Assault Hotline is open 24/7. You can speak with someone who understands what you’re going through.

Take Your Time — We’re Here

There is no “right” way to feel, and no deadline for healing. Whether you want to cry, scream, go silent, or just rest — your feelings are valid.

You may have deep fears, especially if you think you might be pregnant. You might wonder what will happen to your body, your future, or even your identity. You may feel completely overwhelmed.

We understand.
And we want you to know: healing isn’t about rushing into answers — it’s about being surrounded by care.

There isn’t only one path forward. There isn’t only one way to heal.
Some women feel that being heard, respected, and fully informed gives them the strength to move forward with peace. And for many, just being reminded that they are more than what happened to them is the first step.

You are not what someone did to you. You are not broken.
You are still whole, still worthy of love and support, and still in charge of your future.
