Week 3 of Pregnancy: The Tiny Beginning of a New Life

Week 3 of pregnancy fertilization occurs

Week 3 of Pregnancy

At just three weeks, pregnancy is in its earliest stages—but big changes are already happening! If conception has occurred, a new life is beginning to develop, even though it is still too early to confirm with a home pregnancy test. Whether you’re feeling excited, nervous, or uncertain, understanding what’s happening in your body can help you navigate this new journey.

How Big Is the Baby at Week 3?

Right now, the developing baby is incredibly small—less than a millimeter in size. After fertilization, the egg forms a protective layer to prevent any more sperm from entering. This tiny fertilized egg contains all the genetic information from both parents and is already dividing rapidly. Within days, it reaches the blastocyst stage, a crucial early step in development.

What Happens During Week 3?

During this week, the fertilized egg travels through the fallopian tube toward the uterus. After about five days, it arrives and begins the implantation process. The uterine lining, prepared by progesterone, provides a nourishing environment for the egg to attach and start growing.

Once the blastocyst implants, it signals the body to start producing the pregnancy hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin). This hormone plays a critical role in maintaining pregnancy by supporting the development of the placenta and ensuring that the uterine lining remains thick and healthy. Over the next several weeks, hCG levels will rise, eventually becoming detectable through pregnancy tests.

At this point, you may not feel any major symptoms, but some women report early signs of pregnancy, such as mild cramping, fatigue, or even light spotting (known as implantation bleeding). However, it is still too early for a home pregnancy test to provide a reliable result.

How Can You Confirm a Pregnancy?

By the end of the 5th week (21 days after ovulation), implantation is complete, and pregnancy tests can detect hCG in urine. While home pregnancy tests are an option, it’s important to confirm the results with a certified test to ensure accuracy.
